What happened to Blockbuster?

Blockbuster can happen to any company.

If you want your business to remain relevant in 10 years, you must invest in DEI.

The woke narrative has many (white) leaders feeling insecure about their ability, their place and relevance. Many have said it’s time for white men, in particular, to sit down and shut up, or else they’ll offend someone.  


Sad but true. We hear stories all the time. 


You'll remain relevant as long as you understand behavior, buying motivators, customer service, have business acumen, and can solve problems. No matter how advanced AI gets. These skills will always be of use and value. 


However, it is unwise not to understand how the world is shifting and ignore the need for DEI. The U.S. is becoming increasingly diverse, meaning the products and services we offer today may require a drastic shift or change in the future.


You don’t want to be Blockbuster, do you?

What happened to Blockbuster can happen to any busing. Their refusal to accept that technology would disrupt the movie rental industry made them irrelevant in less than five years of Netflix’s arrival. Certainly, you don’t want to be Blockbuster. Especially when you have control of that decision today. 


Use your business acumen to be intentional and avoid woke tactics. Don’t over-invest in supplier diversity or hiring metrics. 


Take the anti-woke, strategic approach to DEI, where decisions and initiatives are data-driven and measurable. Using data as the baseline, you can identify your target audience, what matters to them, and your product or service's role in their lives. 


Armed with that information, you can start to identify and track trends and changes, equipping you to adapt to your target audience's evolving needs. 


That is how DEI should be used–to solve a business problem.
